Industry Applications and Benefits of Inductivity Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS)

Westmoreland Mechanical Testing & Research utilizes ICP-MS, the Inductivity Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer, which can detect metal and non-metal concentrations as low as one part per billion (ppb) on non-interfered low-background isotopes. The ICP-MS has many advantages over other analysis techniques including atomic absorption and optimal emission spectrometry.

ICP-MS is useful for industries that require testing of metals, nonmetal and composites, and chemicals such as the aerospace and power generation industries to ensure the materials you are testing are both reliable and accurate.

A mass spectrum can be interpreted similar to a computer program searching and scanning data to find the best possible match. Given an accurate mass and an estimated error tolerance, our mass spectrometer can easily calculate the elemental composition of a material.

Westmoreland Mechanical Testing & Research is NADCAP accredited to test Antimony, Arsenic, Bismuth, Lead, Selenium, Tellurium, and Thallium in nickel alloys with a primary focus on trace metals analysis as specified in ASTM E2823-11, Standard Test Method for Analysis of Nickel Alloys by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry.

What Advantages Does Mass Spectrometry Offer?

Westmoreland Mechanical Testing & Research has a mass spectrometer that functions in standard, collision and reaction mode. These options give WMT&R the ability to test samples that may contain elements causing spectral interferences in other test methods by selection of optimum elemental isotopes for your analyses.
