Westmoreland Mechanical Testing & Research Welcomes The Pennsylvania State University Class to World Headquarters
Youngstown, PA USA, April 1, 2016– Westmoreland Mechanical Testing & Research, Inc (WMT&R) was excited to have The Pennsylvania State University’s Microstructure of Metals class visit the Youngstown headquarters on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 for the second annual facility tour and engineering presentation. The Penn State Materials Science and Engineering Department and Microstructures of Metals class were invited to visit WMT&R to witness how an industry leader conducts testing to ensure conformance and quality of metal microstructure that is involved in aerospace applications.
"The visit to WMTR was an invaluable experience for our students. We deeply appreciate WMTR's support of Penn State's educational mission." stated Susan Sinnott, Professor and Head, Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
Throughout the tour, the class learned about several state-of-the-art facilities and capabilities including hundreds of Servo Hydraulic Frames, fracture and fatigue testing, research and development laboratory and advance testing, tensile testing, and concluded the tour in the metallographic lab with an explanation of grain structure and size.
“Our department was excited to give a presentation of our capabilities, connecting what is currently being taught in Microstructure of Metals and the current trends of the industry,” Adrian Rossi, Materials Engineer, commented, “It was nice to do something for a class that did so much for me.” Adrian is an alumnus of Penn State and is excited to uphold the tradition of university-led tours throughout the headquarters.
WMT&R had the opportunity to tour the undergraduates and assist in educational and informational inspiration for the class, as well as apply real-world procedures to their academic material. WMT&R has a tradition of touring Penn State students and other universities with company leadership to introduce current students to the testing, research and development industry and related careers.
"Our visit to WMTR provided our students with an invaluable opportunity to visit industry and observe for themselves one of the ways they can use their MatSE degrees in the future. Visiting industry also motivates the students to continue learning and doing their best in the classroom because they can relate what they are learning now to what they will be doing in the near future." Amy Robinson, Research Associate and Instructor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering
